Both ENDS submitted a public comment on the proposed access to information policy of the Asian Development Bank. In the regime of exceptions and limitations to the disclosure policy, we are concerned about the lack of a clear requirement for the Bank to adequately justify exceptions. We would prefer the regime of exceptions and limitations to be based on the principle that access to information may be refused only when the Bank can adequately demonstrate harm that may be caused by disclosure.

Ontwikkelingsbanken zouden zich aan strenge milieu- en mensenrechtenregels moeten houden zodat hun projecten de allerarmsten ten goede komen en niet schaden. Both ENDS houdt de banken hieraan.

Both ENDS Comments and recommendations on the Bank Group’s Environmental and Social Policy of the AfDB Integrated Safeguards System
This letter by Both ENDS to the African Development Bank is a comment written in reaction to a draft version published by the Bank of its Environmental and Social Policy as part of a formal public consultation held by the Bank. This comment was sent to the bank along a joint submission letter with other CSOs, and specifically responds to the overarching Policy.
The bank's flexible requirements for clients and national standards for risky projects dilute safeguards. Project approval should be predicated on specific and binding targets for compliance and reflect input from communities involved.

A joint CSO submission to the European Investment Bank, Standard 11 on intermediate finance in the Public consultation on the EIB Group's
16 civil society organisations including Both ENDS have written a letter of concern to the European Investment Bank about a newly proposed standard for the Bank its intermediate finance investing. Both ENDS contribution to the contents of the joint letter consists out of proposals for improvement of screening, scoping, due diligence, appraisal, monitoring and supervision of high-risk clients and sub-projects. through financial intermediaries and clear and mandatory social, environmental and human rights requirements for FI investing matters.

Nieuws / 22 August 2022Klacht bij ontwikkelingsbanken over de Nachtigal stuwdam in Kameroen
Both ENDS partner IFI Synergy heeft namens omwonenden een klacht ingediend bij de Wereldbank over de Kameroense Nachtigal-stuwdam. Deze dam zorgt lokaal voor veel problemen maar de compensatie schiet tekort, vinden de omwonenden. Ook vinden zij dat zij voorafgaand aan de bouw van de dam niet voldoende zijn geïnformeerd en geconsulteerd.

Nieuws / 4 May 2015Nieuwe Aziatische Infrastructuur Investeringsbank moet strenge eisen stellen.
Op initiatief van China wordt gewerkt aan het opzetten van de Aziatische Infrastructuur Investeringsbank (AIIB). Als ‘Chinees alternatief voor de Wereldbank’ zal de AIIB zich richten op het financieren van grootschalige infrastructuurprojecten in Azië. De bank belooft ‘lean, clean and green’ te worden. Dat wil zeggen: niet bureaucratisch, niet corrupt en milieuvriendelijk. Toch vrezen maatschappelijke organisaties desastreuze gevolgen voor mens en milieu, gezien de slechte reputatie van China op dit gebied. In een brief aan de AIIB en in een persbericht roept onze partner NGO Forum on ADB de bank op om strikte criteria (safeguards) te ontwikkelen.

Goed nieuws voor het klimaat: vorige week heeft de European Investment Bank (EIB) besloten vanaf 2021 geen aan fossiele brandstoffen gerelateerde projecten meer te financieren. Dit staat in de nieuwe energiestrategie van de bank.

Joint Submission of comments and recommendations to the Public Consultation on AfDB Integrated Safeguards System
Together with 29 other CSO's, we've submitted our comments and recommendations in the Public Consultation on the AfDB Integrated Safeguards System. These include that the Bank should prioritize community-led development and human rights-based approaches; protect natural resources and tackles environmental and climate crises; raise the bar on access to information, transparency and accountability; facilitate participatory processes in policies, programmes and projects; and end inequality, poverty, and the cutback and privatization of vital services.

Joint CSO Submission EIB Group Environmental and Social Policy
25 civil society organisations, including Both ENDS have submitted a comment on the overarching policy of the newly proposed Environmental and Social Framework of the EIB Group. The EIB has to undertake environmental, climate, social and human rights assessment and appraisal of proposed projects to inform the decision of financing and must not rely on a clients' self-assessment and reporting (solely). The Policy needs to state clearly what the due diligence, monitoring and reporting responisibilities for the EIB are, in particular regarding human rights and contractual clauses with clients should enshrine the standards in all EIB operations, enabling for suspension of contracts if the standards are not implemented.

Door Pieter JansenDe Europese Investeringsbank EIB moet van het gas af, en Nederland kan daarin het voortouw nemen. Nederland lijkt in haar energiebeleid steeds minder te leunen op gas, en lijkt ook bij de EIB aan te sturen op gasvrije investeringen. Nu is het zaak om die positie vol te houden en ook de andere EU-landen daarvan te overtuigen.

De Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) heeft een unieke beslissing genomen: ze trekt zich terug uit de bouw van 2 omstreden dammen in Ixquisis, Guatemala. Both ENDS steunde partner AIDA al jaren in de strijd tegen deze dammen. Tamara Mohr en Pieter Jansen leggen uit waarom deze beslissing zo bijzonder is.

Grootschalige infrastructuur heeft ter plekke negatieve effecten voor mens en milieu, terwijl de baten elders terechtkomen. Both ENDS zet zich in voor inspraak voor de lokale bevolking en onderzoekt de geldstromen achter deze projecten.

Nieuws / 30 July 2019EIB wil af van fossiele investeringen: grote stap in de goede richting
De Europese Investeringsbank (EIB) heeft haar nieuwe beleid voor investeringen in de energiesector gepubliceerd. Hierin geeft de bank aan vanaf 2020 niet meer in projecten gerelateerd aan fossiele brandstoffen te investeren. Dit is goed nieuws voor het klimaat, en Both ENDS en partners juichen dit voorstel dan ook toe. De lidstaten van de Europese Unie moeten nu, als aandeelhouders van de bank, dit beleid nog goedkeuren.

Op 12 en 13 juli houdt de Aziatische Infrastructuurinvesteringsbank (AIIB) haar jaarvergadering in Luxemburg. China nam het initiatief voor de oprichting van deze internationale bank, en dit is de vierde jaarvergadering in haar bestaan. Nederland neemt als aandeelhouder van de bank aan deze bijeenkomst deel.

Op donderdag 7 november stuurde een groep Europese ngo's, waaronder Both ENDS, een brief aan de vicepresident van de EU Frans Timmermans. We vragen hem met deze brief om steun voor het uitfaseren van de fossiele investeringen van de European Investment Bank.
