Op zaterdag 13 april vindt de jaarlijkse Afrikadag plaats in het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen in Amsterdam.
Both ENDS en Voice 4 Thought verzorgen daar samen een workhop (voertaal Engels), genaamd
'Positive vibes from the Sahel: from regreening to slam poetry'

The Sahel region from Chad to Senegal is often seen in the Netherlands as an immensely dry, infertile area where extremists and smugglers serve and where hunger thrives. But there is so much more to tell about the Sahel region.
Over the last decades, a large number of positive social initiatives have been taken up both in the cities and in rural areas. Initiatives that create and stimulate self-esteem, culture, education, climate resilience and prosperity.
Young people are often the driving force behind these movements, which is not surprising considering that almost 70 percent of the population in a country like Niger is under the age of 25.
In this workshop Both ENDS and Voice4Thought want to tell the other story of the Sahel by highlighting some of these positive initiatives, and by showing how they are interlinked and part of a larger, bottom up movement in this area.

Vorige week werd in Brussel het Alternative Trade Mandate (ATM) officieel gelanceerd. Het ATM is een alliantie van meer dan 50 organisaties uit heel Europa die een reactie geven op het huidige Europese handels- en investeringsbeleid. Zoals de naam al aangeeft brengt het ATM ook een alternatief: een eerlijker en duurzamer beleid waarbij respect voor mens, milieu en democratie centraal staan. Een handelsbeleid waarbij rekening wordt gehouden met de belangen van onder andere vakbonden, boeren, activisten op het gebied van milieu en mensenrechten, en netwerken die zich inzetten voor fair trade. Met de Europese verkiezingen in zicht wordt er momenteel door heel Europa actief campagne gevoerd om het Alternative Trade Mandate onder de aandacht te brengen bij organisaties, het publiek en parlementsleden. SOMO, TNI en Both ENDS, verenigd in de Fair, Green and Global alliantie, sluiten zich hierbij aan door campagne te voeren in Nederland.
Both ENDS co-wrote a Joint CSO Submission on the Draft Revised Version of the EIB Transparency Policy to the EIB. The transparency policy does not adequately reflect key international standards and principles regarding transparency, as set out in the Global Transparency Initiative's Transparency Charter for International Financial Institutions.
The policy should meet the nine key principles as set out in the Global Transparency Initiative's Transparency Charter for International Financial Institutions, namely: 1) the right of access,; 2) automatic disclosure,; 3) access to decision-making; 4) the right to request information; 5) limited exceptions; 6) appeals; 7) whistleblower protection; 8) the promotion of freedom of information; and 9) regular review.
Het werk van de partners van Both ENDS kan gevaarlijk zijn. Neem nou Odey Oyama, directeur van het Rainforest Resource Development Center in Calabar, Cross River State in Nigeria. Hij is al een paar weken ondergedoken. Net op tijd kreeg hij - via via - te horen dat hij wordt gezocht en drie weken geleden viel de politie plotseling zijn huis binnen. Odey durft niet meer naar zijn gezin terug te keren. Zijn werk heeft te veel weerstand opgeroepen zo lijkt het [1]. Hij schrijft aan ons: “Absolutely without any warrant whatsoever, men and officers of the police forced their way into my residence on Sunday January 27th, 2013, through one of my bedrooms. I had actually previously reported to the police that I was in need of protection by reason of some of the things I heard and perceived around.”
Today, almost 90 organisations and networks from around the world, including Both ENDS, sent a letter to the European Commission to urge the EU to stop including UPOV91 in Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). The main objective of UPOV91 is to further erode traditional seeds rights and to regulate local seed markets in the interest of internationally operating seed companies.
This matter is urgent because currently, the EU and Indonesia are negotiating an FTA. Including UPOV91 in this FTA means that Indonesia will have to change its policies, which will take away the farmers' rights to:
- breed, save and exchange all seeds and other planting material
- participate in decisions concerning seed improvement/ breeding, selection, quality standards, pricing, production, distribution and diversity
- customary practice especially in regard to indigenous seed
- be protected from being sold fake and inappropriate seed
- have a true choice between the use of certified and seed from fellow farmer managed seed systems.
