Vandaag is het internationale vrouwendag. Een dag die zo’n 100 jaar geleden voortkwam uit stakingen van vrouwen tegen slechte arbeidsomstandigheden in de textielindustrie. Sindsdien is er veel verbeterd voor vrouwen, maar moeten we helaas ook constateren dat mannen en vrouwen nog steeds niet gelijk zijn. In 1949 waarschuwde Simone de Beauvoir al dat je vrouwenrechten nooit als vanzelfsprekend kunt beschouwen, en recente ontwikkelingen zoals de aanscherping van abortuswetten in sommige landen, bevestigen dat. Ze laten zien dat ook in het ‘Vrije Westen’ vrouwenrechten nog helemaal niet zo vanzelfsprekend zijn.

Deze maand vieren we de 30e verjaardag van zowel de VN Verklaring voor het Recht op Ontwikkeling als van de Internationale Dag van de Mensenrechten. Both ENDS doet, samen met gemeenschappen en organisaties over de hele wereld, een oproep aan Ontwikkelingsbanken, overheden en bedrijven om 3 stappen te zetten voor het naleven van mensenrechten in ontwikkelingssamenwerking.

The population of the informal settlement Masakhane, South Africa is highly affected by the pollution and environmental damage caused by the the coal-fired Duvha power station. Before the mining and power station developments, families had access to and control over the land, even if they did not own it. Farming used to be the main source of livelihood. Today, mining companies and investors own most of the land, and as a direct consequence people have lost a lot of their farming and grazing land. This video shows testimonies of victims and their efforts to turn the tide.
