Annual Report 2025
We proudly present our Annual Report 2025! In a year marked by growing geopolitical tensions, shrinking civic space and major cuts to Dutch funding for international cooperation, Both ENDS and our partners around the world continued to stand together in the pursuit of environmental justice. Despite an increasingly challenging context, we achieved important milestones that demonstrate the power of long-term collaboration, persistence and locally led solutions.
Throughout 2025, our global partner network once again proved its strength. From supporting community-based climate adaptation in Bangladesh to securing long-awaited justice for Indigenous communities affected by the Barro Blanco dam in Panama, our joint efforts showed that meaningful change takes time, trust and determination. In Mozambique, years of advocacy contributed to the withdrawal of Dutch export credit support for a harmful LNG project, while across the Sahel, communities continued to restore degraded landscapes through farmer-led regeneration initiatives.
Local leadership remained at the heart of our work. By helping partners access direct funding and investing in flexible support for women environmental human rights defenders, we strengthened the capacity of communities to develop and scale solutions rooted in their own knowledge, priorities and lived experiences. Together with our allies in GAGGA, we also helped increase recognition among policymakers and donors of the importance of gender-just, locally led climate action.
2025 was also a year of transition for Both ENDS. We launched our new 2026–2030 strategy, developed in close collaboration with our partners, reaffirming our commitment to strengthening the global environmental justice movement. At the same time, significant funding cuts forced us to say goodbye to valued colleagues whose dedication has helped shape our organisation over many years.
Although the challenges we face continue to grow, so does our conviction that lasting change starts with communities themselves. Together with our partners and allies worldwide, we remain committed to building a more just, inclusive and sustainable future. With great pride, Both ENDS launches today it’s new strategy for the coming 5 years: “Connecting people for an environmentally just world”. This strategy was developed in close collaboration with our partner network, which has always been, and still is, the foundation of our work. Together, we strive for an environmentally just world in which people and ecosystems thrive and all people can live a life of dignity.

Both ENDS, along with many other Dutch organisations, is leaving social media platform X. In January, we will join the campaign ‘#DetoX’ by De Goede Zaak and Stem op een Vrouw. We hope that many organisations will follow us so that the hate, misinformation and the undermining of democracy on X are given less space.

At Both ENDS, we hold our own responsibility, self-direction, an open feedback culture, and personal development in high regard. Chaos, you might think? Not at all, it leads to an effective way of working with much enjoyment. The flat organizational structure that Both ENDS has been implementing since 2016 is founded on collectivity. In this, you can also see our aim of 'Connecting people for change' reflected.

News / 9 november 2023Both ENDS welcomes new leadership: Annelieke Douma and Karin van Boxtel are interim directors!
Both ENDS has two new interim directors from November 9: Annelieke Douma and Karin van Boxtel. After 15 years, Danielle Hirsch hands over the directorship. She is currently standing for election to the GroenLinks/PvdA list. Annelieke and Karin will lead Both ENDS during the transition period to a new director of Both ENDS. Together with the board and the organisation, the new directors duo is full of energy to get to work in the coming months.

At Both ENDS, we were happy to finally be able to meet many of our partners again in 2022. Although digital meetings are here to stay, they will never beat a live encounter every once in a while where we get to know each other's contexts, learn from each other and motivate and inspire one another.
But be it live or online, together we will work towards a green, just and healthy 2023!
