Minister Sjoerdsma hosts roundtable conversations with civil society

This week, Minister Sjoerdsma organized roundtable conversations with civil society organizations – a valuable initiative that brings together Dutch civil society voices to address critical challenges faced by democratic societies.

Our Both ENDS' director Karin van Boxtel had the pleasure of moderating a conversationfocused on the suppression of civic space.

The key messages we shared during the conversation:

  •  Equal and just trade is a condition for a healthy civic space: A just trade policy means that human rights defenders – and definitely women and indigenous people – are protected in economic projects, especially when Dutch public finance is used for these projects in the global South. The IOB evaluation of last year is clear: ensure human rights are ranked higher on the trade agenda, increase transparency, and provide concrete support needed by human rights defenders.
  • Without civic space, there are no locally-led climate solutions and food justice: the people who best protect forests, water and ecosystems, drive the energy transition and produce food — indigenous communities, local women farmers, female environmental activists — are often also those whose voices are most silenced. Without civil society speaking out, organise and improve policies, climate and food security goals are simply not achievable. Women are key in this: they are hit hardest by climate change, yet receive the least hearing and the fewest resources (for instance climate finance).
  • Restore what has been broken. A healthy democracy needs a strong counter-voice, here and in the Global South. Over the past two years, significant ground has been lost on this front. Therefore, rebuild together with civil society what is under pressure: through structural funding, continuous dialogue and consultation mechanisms, and genuine attention to what policies bring about in practice — including for women and vulnerable communities far beyond The Hague.

We look forward to a continued collaboration on civil society space, just trade and how to invest in locally led climate solutions.
