Come and join the lecture 'Hunting & gathering in the rainforest: for children, or not?'

The Rutu Foundation and Both ENDS will both organise a lecture about Opportunities for Forest Protection and Conservation of Native Culture in the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam.

Indigenous hunter-gatherer tribes like the Negrito in the Philippines, the Penan in Sarawak and the Ghonds in India have a wealth of knowledge of the rainforest, their natural habitat, and biodiversity. The history of the Negrito tribe goes back at least 40.000 years. However, due to the construction of dams, plantations and deforestation, their livelihoods and the survival of their culture and traditions are at stake. For this reason, there is the risk of loss of their valuable knowledge of the rainforest and local biodiversity.

The Rutu Foundation, which is a partner of Both ENDS, focuses on the acknowledgement of these indigenous tribes’ land rights and culture together with partner organisations Keystone Foundation (India) and Non-Timber Forest Products Exchange Programme (NTFP-EP). Rutu supports intercultural multilingual education and creates opportunities for youth. The transfer of knowledge and conservation of the native language are important factors for encouraging a sense of self-worth and identity. By organising events such as festivals about food, language and culture for children, young Negrito leaders hope to create more awareness of the conservation of their indigenous culture, knowledge and traditions.

On April 16th, dr. Ellen-Rose Kambel, director/founder of the Rutu Foundation, and drs. Jenne de Beer, member of the international advisory board of the Rutu Foundation, will talk about all this (and more) at the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. Entrance is free, and the lecture will run from 20:00 until 22:00.
