Priorities for climate justice at COP30
COP30 in Belém will be a defining moment for global climate action. The stakes could not be higher: the world is off track to limit warming to 1.5°C, while climate impacts intensify and inequalities deepen. At the same time, there is a real opportunity for governments to reset course – phasing out fossil fuels, strengthening adaptation, delivering fair climate finance, and ensuring a just transition.
This position paper by the International Climate Coalition sets out key recommendations for the Netherlands and the European Union to champion ambition, equity, and accountability at COP30, and to help secure outcomes that protect people, ecosystems, and the most vulnerable communities.

In 2011 one of the world’s largest gas reserves was found in the coastal province of Cabo Delgado, in the north of Mozambique. A total of 35 billion dollars has been invested to extract the gas. Dozens of multinationals and financiers are involved in these rapid developments. Although the Dutch government has been avoiding this decision for years, this move has finally ended part of the Dutch involvement in this disastrous project.

We came to the Amazon hoping for decisive progress on phasing out fossil fuels, yet the final outcome fell far short of the ambition science and justice demand. The agreement brought welcome commitments on adaptation finance and global indicators, but it refused to confront the structural forces that make climate action so difficult.
