Communities regreening the Sahel: strengthening resilience from the ground up

How can communities in the Sahel strengthen their food systems in the face of climate change and other shocks? Through the ARFSA Programme, Both ENDS and its partners SPONG (Burkina Faso), CRESA/INRAN (Niger) and IED Afrique (Senegal) are working together to show that locally led landscape restoration works.

Our joint programme builds on the ongoing Communities Regreen the Sahel initiative, supporting farmers and pastoralists to restore degraded land through Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) and other agroecological practices. These community-driven efforts not only restore biodiversity and ecosystems but also strengthen food security, livelihoods, and social cohesion. After one year of implementation, we’re proud to share this video that highlights what we’ve achieved so far and where we’re headed by mid-2027:

This project is funded by the Accelerating Resilient Food Systems in Africa (ARFSA) programme from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), commissioned by the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With knowledge and expertise, ARFSA helps organisations with proven experience to scale up and accelerate their contribution to resilient local food systems — working together to increase food security in Africa and Yemen.
