WORKS WITH BOTH ENDS ON
NBD is active in fostering cooperation in the Nile so as to increase the range and magnitude of direct benefits to Nile Basin citizens, and serve as a catalyst for greater regional integration, both economic and political, with potential benefits far exceeding those derived from the river itself.
NBD and Both ENDs are working together in implementing the Negotiated Approach (NA), including with the use of stories (contextual and strategic scenarios) and games. This in order to ensure bottom-up stakeholder engagement in the management of the Nile Basin and to foster Nile cooperation. NBD is a member of the African Negotiated Approach to IWRM group that is led by Both ENDS and actively participates in the NA group meetings and activities.
ADDED VALUE OF PARTNERSHIP
The vision that NBD strives for is a Nile Basin that is free of conflict, leading to achievement of justice, human rights, good governance, poverty eradication and protection of the environment. Both ENDS has been supporting NBD to achieve its mandate of enabling civil society organizations working on Nile Cooperation and development issues to add value to inter-governmental programmes and processes and improve water governance and information & knowledge exchanges in the basin.
NBD membership comprises of over 900 CSOs all over the Nile Basin. NBD works through a decentralized system with its national chapters known as the Nile discourse forums (NDFs), the NBD General Assembly and a Board of Directors comprising of representatives from all the Nile Basin riparian states and partnership with other institutions. NBD achievements to-date have been greatly supported by the existing MOU signed between the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and NBD. Through the MOU, the institutions have pledged to exchange information and collaborate in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development programmes, programs and activities.
