Small can be big
In different parts of the factory he shows me the production processes of pressing and filtering the oil. With the waste product of the seeds his Tanzanian workers produce pallets that can be used in cooking stoves and long bricks that can replace charcoal in firing up big ovens. The jatropha oil is sold to a Dutch company which makes jet (bio)fuel and the bricks Diligent sells to a local orphanage and to restaurants and hotels in the city. Jan tells me that Diligent sells everything they produce within the month, that is why he wants to increase the production and processing for next year.
When we get to his office Jan explains how Diligent only buys jatropha seeds from small scale famers who use jatropha mainly as hedge plants, for every kilo of seeds Diligent gives 300 Tsh. Until now Diligent worked with collectors, they collected the seeds from the farmers and were also taking care of the payment. The problem with this method is that it is always unclear how much the farmers actually get and how much sticks to the collector. Therefore Diligent started working with the Tanzanian NGO Faida MaLi. Faida MaLi sets up groups of farmers from the same village. These farmer groups choose a head farmer from amongst their midst; the head farmer is the one who takes care of the selling of seeds to Diligent. Because the head farmer is a part of the group, the process of selling and distributing the money is very transparent.
On my way back from the factory, Jan asks me what stands out most to me on my first visit to Tanzania. I reply him that what has become very clear to me, is how dissatisfied people in Holland are. Jan smiles and says that I hit the nail right on the head, it is exactly the reason why he came to Arusha six years ago.

Nieuws / 13 januari 2025Nieuwe samenwerking met RVO voor veerkrachtige voedselsystemen in de Sahel
De situatie in de Afrikaanse Sahel is de snelst groeiende humanitaire crisis ter wereld. Ruim 3 miljoen mensen vluchten voor geweld. Zij worden geteisterd door honger, ziekte en toenemende droogte door klimaatverandering. Both ENDS en haar partners werken succesvol aan het versneld vergroten van de veerkracht van lokale voedselsystemen en gemeenschappen in de Sahel, gebaseerd op ‘Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration’ (FMNR). Het project, dat wordt gefinancierd door DOB Ecology, loopt halverwege 2026 ten einde, maar heeft al een vervolg gekregen dankzij een nieuwe samenwerking met de Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO).

With the Dare to Trust grant, the Taing Se Malu organization decided to purchase pigs that can be raised and increased in quantities by the women members of their organization. More importantly, through the grant, they formed a women’s group and a youth group to empower them in their pursuit of a more gender-just community.

Indigenous women in Didipio, Philippines, grew close to each other when confronting the mining corporation OceanaGold. Now they continue their struggle collectively in the women's group "Bileg Daggiti Babbai". With the help of LILAK they started a sustainable farming project, which helps them make a living to support their day to day needs and afford their children's education.
The project was made possible in Both ENDS's Dare to Trust project, supported by the Dutch Postcode Lottery.

Den Haag/San Francisco, 12 dec. 2024 - Vandaag verschijnt de bijgewerkte versie van de Financial Exclusions Tracker: financialexclusionstracker.org. De website houdt bij welke bedrijven worden uitgesloten door institutionele beleggers, pensioenfondsen en banken vanwege problemen met mensenrechten, volksgezondheid en duurzaamheid. De meest voorkomende redenen voor uitsluiting zijn banden met fossiele brandstoffen, wapens of tabak.

Van 26-29 november 2024 organiseren Both ENDS en partners het ‘Civil Society Forum on Investment Policies, Climate and Sustainable Development Goals’ plaats in Entebbe, Uganda. Onze collega’s Iván en Fernando vertellen over het belang van dit evenement. “Met dit evenement hopen we een diepgaand perspectief te bieden op de effecten van het huidige investeringsbeleid op klimaat- en milieukwesties, met een sterke focus op het Afrikaanse continent.”

Den Haag, 12 november - ‘Zorg dat Nederland niet van de kaart verdwijnt’, met die boodschap voerden met Partos zo’n 100 organisaties vandaag actie in Den Haag tegen de geplande bezuinigingen op ontwikkelingssamenwerking. Drie internationale partners van Nederland uit Jemen, Nepal en Oeganda riepen de Tweede Kamer op om deze week in de begrotingsbehandeling van het ministerie voor Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingshulp, tegen de plannen van minister Klever te stemmen.

Den Haag, 12 november 2024 - De rechter heeft uitspraak gedaan in het hoger beroep dat Shell aantekende in de Klimaatzaak die Milieudefensie in 2021 heeft gewonnen van Shell. Het Hooggerechtshof oordeelt dat de olie- en gasgigant wel een verantwoordelijkheid heeft in het verminderen van zijn uitstoot, maar legt geen reductieverplichting op.
