In memory of Peter Simi

We are shocked by the sudden death of Peter Simi. Since 2005 Both ENDS has been working closely with Peter and his organization ELCI. After an illness of a few weeks Peter died on Saturday, March 31 in a hospital in Nairobi.

To Both ENDS Peter was a very valued colleague, working hard not only for his own organization, but with his positive and professional attitude often making a valuable contribution to the work Both ENDS and its other partners do around the world.
In June 2007 Annelieke Douma and Martien Hoogland from Both ENDS visited ELCI's office in Nairobi on the sidelines of a climate meeting. Since then, a very close collaboration between Peter and a number of employees of Both ENDS developed. Over the years Peter visited Both ENDS, but he also met a number of us in Africa to exchange information and expertise.

In March of this year Peter went to Marseille to attend the World Water Forum. Just before his trip he wrote a message to Both ENDS: " I have been unwell from all the field work I have been doing but am recovering steadily and now I am back at the office trying to get ready for the WWF in March." Unfortunately he was too weak in Marseilles to actively participate in the forum. Back in Kenya it became clear that this situation was much worse than anyone had imagined.

Our thoughts go out to Peter's close family and friends. We wish them much strength to cope with their loss. For Peters' organization ELCI this is an unexpected, very heavy shock: we hope that his good work can still be continued with commitment. Both ENDS will do everything within its power to help with that.
